A Moment of Normalcy

For one day, the United States felt normal again. Not perfect. Not healed. Not suddenly free from the ugliness, division, corruption, and exhaustion that have dragged this country into such a dark place. But normal. Proud. Capable. Great in the way America is supposed to be great.

The opening of the Obama Center on the South Side of Chicago was more than a ceremony. It was an exhibit of American excellence. The South Side became a cathedral of achievement, dignity, culture, and possibility. It reminded the country that leadership does not have to be cruel, sloppy, loud, dishonest, or small. Michelle Obama stood there and reminded us what public life can look like when it is rooted in decency, honor, intelligence, and grace. She proved again that greatness is not bluster. Greatness is discipline. Greatness is service. Greatness is carrying yourself in a way that makes other people stand taller.

Then came Mamdani’s speech in New York, and for a moment, it made all of us feel like New Yorkers. It captured that old American feeling of people overcoming together, achieving together, and believing together. Not the fake patriotism of flags used as weapons, but the real patriotism of a city and a country refusing to quit on themselves.

And then there were the soccer fans. Clips from around the country showed tens of thousands of foreigners marveling at America’s landscapes, cities, people, and energy. At a time when our international reputation has been badly damaged, watching visitors adore this country was genuinely inspiring. It was a reminder that America still has beauty the world recognizes, and potential the world still wants to believe in.

For one day, America looked like itself again. That feeling matters. It is proof that the country we miss is not gone. It is buried, bruised, and waiting to be reclaimed.
