Mystics Look Ready To Compete

The Washington Mystics may be arriving ahead of schedule.

The general preseason thought was that Washington would be building around youth, focused more on development than immediate results. That made sense on paper. The Mystics have several young pieces still learning the league, and teams in that stage usually take their lumps before becoming serious playoff threats.

But the early results suggest something different.

Washington has already won at Toronto and Indiana, while also taking the New York Liberty to overtime at home. That is not empty noise. That is a meaningful early-season signal. The Mystics do not look like a team simply collecting developmental minutes. They look competitive, organized, and capable of living in that big block of teams underneath the Aces and Liberty.

That matters because the WNBA middle tier appears wide open. Las Vegas and New York still sit at the top, but behind them there is room for movement. Washington looks like one of the teams capable of forcing its way into that conversation.

The biggest reason is talent.

Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen already look like legitimate all-star caliber players. They are not just promising young pieces. They are producing at a level that changes expectations. Citron gives Washington poise, skill, and perimeter reliability, while Iriafen brings real frontcourt force and two-way upside.

Meanwhile, Shakira Austin is playing at a high level, giving the Mystics another interior presence who can impact the game physically. Georgia Amoore also looks comfortable at point guard, which is a major development for a young team trying to win sooner than expected.

Then there is Lauren Betts, who should continue improving as she gets acclimated to the league. Her size and skill give Washington even more long-term upside, and as the game slows down for her, the Mystics’ frontcourt could become a real problem.

This may still be a young roster, but it does not look like a passive rebuilding team.

Washington looks ready to compete for a playoff position in 2026.

And if the young talent keeps growing this quickly, the Mystics may become a much tougher out than the market expected.
